âItâs the quarter final!â Chris shouted at me.
âI know it.â
âMan, youâve missed, like, half the season.â
âItâs the business and all, you hear me? I gotta run classes on weekends to meet demand.â
Chris shook his head at me as if Iâd just swiped up his wallet from the coffee table there and taken out a tenner.
Scotty and Gar, sitting on the other sofa, didnât look impressed either.
It was a Friday pizza night at Chrisâ place. We mostly met at his as he had the bigger lounge and the best TV. Nothing heavy to the shindig, just kicking back with a few beers, an action movie or a mini FIFA tournament on the Playstation. Plus shooting the shit over Saturdayâs game. Weâd been going to the football for years. Too many years, tell the truth.
We started going together shortly after we left school, carried on full steam through our twenties, but it was wearing thin now. Between us thereâd been two divorces, three children, a short prison stretch, a suspended sentence, a cancer scare, a stint of rehab, a serious car wreck, and a record deal that promised much and delivered fuck all. Too many scars, too many lost battles.
Too much life.
I didnât know if any of the others felt the same, and I sure as shit wasnât going to ask, but thatâs how I saw it. They were good company, donât get me wrong, and Iâd leaned on them plenty for help over the years, and given it back in spades, but times were different now.
The Friday pizza nights I could handle. But the Saturday footie, the banter and argy bargy â sometimes a little more â with the opposition supporters? Nah, I was ditching it.
But obviously I couldnât tell them that. I was just phasing it out of my life.
